MELASMA CONTROL

SUN SPOTS / PHOTODAMAGE
Sun spots, age spots, “liver” spots – these are names for the small brown spots that sometimes appear on your face and hands, caused by photodamage, or sun exposure. These solar lentigenes can emerge at any age and on any skin type, although people with light skin are most susceptible. Over time, the spots can darken or even grow to become unsightly ‘splotches.’
The best prevention, of course, is daily sunscreen. For those who haven’t been careful in the sun, lasers can help restore even skin tone.
The PhotoAcoustic energy of the MedLite C6 safely targets the individual spots, gently breaking the pigment into tiny particles. You’ll notice the spot turning gray or white for a few minutes, a natural response of the skin as it absorbs the energy. The spot will then turn darker and sloughs off completely within one to two weeks. At this point, lighter skin starts to blend in as it heals, promoting an even toned appearance.
 
FRECKLES
Freckles are small flat brown marks arising on the face and other sun exposed areas. They are most often seen in fair skinned people, but they are an inherited characteristic that sometimes affects darker skin types as well. Freckles are more prominent in summer but fade considerably or disappear in winter as the outer skin cells are replaced by new cells. As the person ages this type of freckle generally become less noticeable. The freckles are best removed by lasers targeting the pigments and pigment cells. When the wavelength of the Medlite C6 is doubled, we can use it effectively to treat lentigines, freckles and other brown spots.
 
HORI'S NEVUS
This pigmented disorder occurs as dark spots usually in Asians (0.8 percent incidence) and appears later in life.
The condition is also known as acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (ABNOM), or acquired dermal melanocytosis (ADM), Hori's nevus can sometimes occur concurrently with Melasma compounding the problem. Although they may look like freckles occurring on the cheeks, nose and forehead, they are not (as freckles occurs early in life and tends to fade with age). Treatment is best with a Q-Switched Laser (Nd Yag, Ruby or Alexandrite).
